Fisheries

Thermocline has extensive expertise in a broad array of research pertaining to commercial, recreational and artisanal fisheries. This experience comes from over 25 years working in the world's largest tuna and trawl fisheries where research has covered the biology and ecology of target and non-target species, development of ecological and population assessments to determine sustainable exploitation, and the development of management advice to meet specific policies and mandates. Some examples of these research projects includes:

- Biology, feeding ecology, electronic tagging and status of longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol) in Australian waters https://doi.org/10.1007/s11160-019-09589-5

- Population dyanamics and stock assessment of Talang queenfish (Scomberoides commersonnianus) https://doi.org/10.1016/j.fishres.2006.08.005

The growing activity of recreational fisheries has also been a large focus of research by Thermocline, especially in the arena of developing cost-effective sampling designs, such as Time-Location Sampling and Respondent-Driven Sampling, to representatively sample all components of the fishery as well as understanding the human dimensions of the fishery. Some representative research includes:

- Developing Respondent-Driven Sampling for sampling specialised recreational fishers https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-2979.2010.00354.x

- Quantifying the human dimensions of recreational fishing https://doi.org/10.1111/faf.12149
